Abstract
Purpose: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are the most frequent and problematic problems in care settings. A staff training program to understand and manage BPSD is important to increase the quality of life in patients with dementia and care staff. The purpose of this study is to review the literatures related to the effectiveness of staff education programs to reduce BPSD in long-term care facilities.

Methods: For the data collection, the electronic database(Pubmed, CINHAL, Riss, Kiss, DBpia, Google scholar) was used for searching with the key words including 'dementia', 'Alzheimer disease', 'aggression', ¡®agitation¡¯, 'behavioral psychological symptoms of dementia', ¡®staff¡¯, ¡®education¡¯ and ¡®program.¡¯ Finally, a total of 19 studies were included for the analysis based on the inclusion criteria.

Results: The most common research design was the cluster randomized controlled trial and types of education programs were ¡®lecture¡¯, ¡®supervision¡¯ and ¡®feedback.¡¯ Training programs provided more than 8 weeks and 11 hours were effective significantly on BPSD. In the contents of the educational programs, the concept of dementia and BPSD, factors of BPSD, general strategies and skills to manage BPSD, non-pharmacological interventions, communication skills and changing the patients¡¯ environment were included. The significant effects were shown on BPSD and staff¡¯s management behaviors with program.

Conclusion: Based on the results of the review studies, the future studies needed to be provided more than 10 hours, 8 weeks and include the contents related to dementia and BPSD(concept, factor, etc.), BPSD managements and skills.
